Item upgrades can be used to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it may increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level, and also boost other stats.
Each item has a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specific amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's stats base increase when it is upgraded. This is the sum of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrading items can be expensive, dependent on the upgrader and the kind of upgrade you decide to do. This is due to the fact that many perks must be replaced in order for the item to be upgraded.
The level of an item is a popular measure of power, and can be found on all tooltips for items. It can also be used to limit the amount of PvP gear players are able to wear as PvP is restricted at a lower level. The average level of an item can be found on the character sheet.
The level of an item can help players compare the power of equipment when they decide to buy or sell. It's a good indicator of the quality of an item and how much damage it is capable of dealing with. Comparing items from a vendor's stock can be done by using the item's level.
On PC, you can view the item level using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will show the item's full description, including the ilvl. It can also be located by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel in chat.
There are various theories on how the item level calculation is made. One theory says that the item level is determined by an equation that determines how valuable an item's stats really are. It is based on the fact that different perks are valued differently, and that gems in the sockets increase the value of the item. Item Luck
A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the chances of item discoveries, the properties spawned on loot drops and the strength of those properties. However, it doesn't directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It gives players a possibility to obtain better gear in earlier waves, and is therefore more valuable in the early game as opposed to later ones, because most players value more powerful weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.
In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chances of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance, which increases with each level of the item and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
Armor, shields and weapons come with an initial Luck value of 40. These items can then be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to grant an additional +40 Luck or to boost the Luck of the item up to 140.

Item Failure
Not all upgrades are successful. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade or to stop players from losing their items if it fails.
When you upgrade an item, the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage indicates the probability of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. The probability of success can only be increased by so high, and the probability that an upgrade will fail can't be greater than 100%..
The success of an item can be affected by the luck of that item. All items have an initial success rate of 25% and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by an additional 5%.
Note that item upgrades are rendered above the items in the inventory which means that enchantment glints and other effects can be masked by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
